On Sunday 7/12 I will host/facilitate/manage a program at ALA – “Serving Students Along the Autism Spectrum” – a panel with Georgia Winson, Director of The Autism Program of Illinois, Bernadette Nowakowski,, Director of Children and Young Adult Services, Chicago Public Library, educational consultant Patty Saidenburg, former children's librarian at The Parkside School in NYC, as well as others. The primary speaking I'm doing is the introductions as well as any moderating needed.
My Independent School Section (ISS) compatriots identified students with autism and aspergers as a population who need attention and support from the library community, as do their parents and caregivers. We see this program as the beginning of a library conversation, as opposed to presenting definitive answers.
New Jersey librarians Dan Weiss and Meg Kolaya, the good folks who created "Autism and Libraries" , will not be able to participate in our program, as they will be receiving an ALSC award at the same time! However, I will have "Autism and Libraries" materials to distribute.
In Chicago at ALA on Sunday? Stop by the McCormick Center West, Room 175 b/c At 10:30 a.m. Come join the conversation!
